You can participate in-person (hooray!) at sessions conveniently offered across the Commonwealth. This course is a total of 3 days, with each day covering 3 sessions each. The series begins in October and concludes in December. Each day will begin at 8:00 a.m. and finish at 4:00 p.m.

Session 1: Team Management
This session will help you identify basic management functions and responsibilities of construction companies. You will learn how as a supervisors, you can effectively manage the relationship dynamics between employees, supervisors, contractors, suppliers and others that are part of each project team. You will develop an understanding of how company organization, lines of responsibility, and duties are related to the fair and efficient management of your team. This session provides you with the foundational knowledge to provide effective direction, organization, and goals that lead you and your team to success.
Session 2: Project & Team Leadership
This session introduces you to construction supervision and provides you with leadership tools and strategies to navigate the challenges that supervision can present. You'll learn basic leadership and motivation principles, as well as explore how different personalities, motivations, and perspectives can impact team development. You will not only develop an understanding of these factors, but learn and apply leadership strategies to cultivate a high-performance team.
Session 3: Communication Skills
Your ability to communicate effectively is paramount to your success in leading a team. In this session, you'll learn how to sort, facilitate, and manage the flow of information that you will encounter in your daily work. You will learn how to enhance your own communication, as well as understand how the best companies communicate, the types of communication mechanisms they use, and how communication and information affect every facet of business.
Session 4: Time Management & Project Scheduling
In this session, you will focus how to effectively plan, schedule, and manage time – not only for yourself, but for that of your team members. You will learn tools and strategies that will empower you to carefully plan work so you and your team can deliver completed projects on time and within budget.
Session 5: Risk Management
Construction projects involve risk; therefore, as a supervisor, you must have a solid understanding of risk, hazards, and safety. In this session, you will learn about the hazards that can exist or arise, and the economic and human consequences that can develop as a result. We'll show how to manage, reduce, or even eliminate these conditions that affect the health and safety of your workers as well as the financial stability of your company.
Session 6: Construction Law & Contract Documents
Understanding the conditions, specifications, and contractual relationships is crucial to your success as a supervisor. In this session, you will learn the definition of contract and peripheral documents used on a construction project. You will also develop an understanding of various documents and their specific roles and functions as well as how those documents facilitate relationships between contractual parties. We'll help you understand your role in controlling quality, time and cost, and show you how you can help to avoid or resolve disputes on a project. Additionally, we'll provide you with an overview of contracts and contract law as related to your role as the construction supervisor.
Session 7: Problem Resolution
In many ways, the construction supervisor is the problem solver on the worksite. This session will help you understand the importance of problem identification and resolution, as well as develop your skill in making the appropriate decision at the right time. You will gain a logical, sequential, and analytical method of identifying problems, seeking opportunities, and deciding on effective solutions.
Session 8: Productivity and Cost Control
Resource management is a critical skill for an effective construction supervisor. In this session, you will learn about cost awareness and control, as well as how to maximize productivity on your projects. You will learn how to use unit costs to determine budgetary information, and the formula for determining productivity for your team. You will learn how to implement tactics that positively impact cost control efforts and productivity improvement. We'll show you how to make decisions that positively affect profit, schedule, quality, and safety.
Session 9: Skills Development
In this session, you will not only reflect on the information presented in the previous sessions, but apply what you have learned on the job. You and your mentor will work together to develop short-term goals related to each area of supervision. Additionally, you will formulate your long-term (5-year) career development path.
